Homecoming: Pigskin Revue
By Katie Lyman
Nothing welcomes Baylor University alumni back home better than one of the school’s oldest and most loved traditions, Pigskin Revue. Despite the absence of the judge’s panel for this unique edition of Sing, all eight organizations left it all on the stage for their family, friends and fellow Baylor bears this homecoming.
Pigskin Revue, a homecoming presentation of the top eight acts from Baylor’s All University Sing 2019, was held this past weekend with shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. This year consisted of Kappa Omega Tau, Chi Omega and Kappa Chi Alpha who were the highest-ranked groups along with five other top acts.
Cedar Park sophomore, Ellie Carr, described her favorite part about performing in Pigskin this year with Chi Omega saying, “definitely the performances! They really brought our entire sorority together around one thing, and we were all constantly hyping each other up. We got to perform with our best friends for this Baylor community that we love so much!”
Acts performed in Pigskin along with All University Sing are primarily put together by Baylor’s greek organizations. For generations, Baylor sororities and fraternities have participated in both of these events, dedicating countless hours of backdrop painting, rehearsals and open stage practices. Despite the intense time commitment, these performances truly bring each group closer to each other and the Baylor family.
Melisa Thompson, mother of a Baylor sophomore, traveled all the way from the Cayman Islands to see her daughter perform in Tri Delta and Alpha Tau Omega’s act. She was so impressed by all the acts this year that she simply couldn’t decide on a favorite.
“I loved Tri Delta’s energy and dancing, the message and vocals of Phi Chi, as well as KOT,” said Thompson. “I thought ‘I’m a Bee’ was adorable from Chi O as well as Zeta’s ‘That’s Not My Name’.”
What sets Pigskin Revue apart from Sing is both the lack of judges and the reduced number of acts. Since Pigskin is not a competition, it is naturally more centered around comradery and unity which is very fitting for a homecoming event. Austin junior, Mariel Mayhew, found that in comparison, Sing was more fun to watch because groups fiercely bring their best performances in hopes of winning.
“Sing is a lot sharper and everyone has a lot more energy and adrenaline because they’re being judged whereas Pigskin they’re just like, ‘ay I’m gonna have fun’,” said Mayhew.
Nonetheless, Pigskin remains one of Baylor’s most beloved homecoming festivities and was even described by both Carr and Thompson as their favorite Baylor tradition. The only criticism received was concerning the availability and process of purchasing tickets. Aside from ticketing adversity, Pigskin Revue will continue to bond chapters together, give alumni an opportunity to re-live their own college performances and inspire future Baylor Bears for years to come.
“Every Baylor tradition has a special place in my heart; however, now that I get to be a part of Pigskin, I would consider it one of my favorite traditions. I think the way it brings organizations together is something really special,” said Carr.
